New tomatoes selected from “old” genetic material

Lamboseeds has introduced new varieties of tomatoes in recent months, developed through breeding activities that have spanned a decade. In Macfrut, Sandro Colombi represented the company with an exposure that impressed the operators.

“We have eliminated the distance between researchers and consumers. For our latest strains, we focused on what is required by consumers, as they are the ones who determine whether a strain is successful. The growers who accepted our challenge are now growing tomatoes that stand out and get better prices. To achieve this, we started with old varieties, safeguarding biodiversity and achieving something unique, ”Colombi explained.

The color is particularly remarkable and makes the products very attractive.

Yields are lower than mass products, but demand is increasing and prices are skyrocketing. “Fewer products does not mean lower gross salable output. Profits actually increase because, as we firmly believe, the whole chain has something to gain if producers make a profit. If it is necessary to be able to present the product, make its uniqueness stand out and focus on its exclusive features. ”

It is not easy to grow tomatoes so small and perfect that they look like pearls. “It’s true, you need very professional growers, and tomatoes cannot be grown anywhere, only where the soil and climate are suitable. It is still a niche segment, but characterized by a deep flavor, umami, a high Brix level, and glutamic acid. ”

The first thing that stands out is the color: dark yellow and orange or “brindle”. “The new key concept of the tomato is therefore to stand out, by emphasizing product differentiation in order to be sought after by customers.
